July 27, 2015- in Longchamps with Elder Durham

“This is Tàtina. She’s a recent convert and is the best member missionary in Argentina. She also has good hats.”

“Breakfast. The stuff that looks like bacon was super like ridiculously sweet. Also the pàn had ham and cheese in it.”

Hello everyone! We had a really good week here finding and teaching. The highlight was José Luis’ dad who is super excited for his baptismal date. The low light was my favorite investigator family let us know that they have to get married, but first have to get divorced. I think I have found everyone that wants to get married and baptised in Argentina, but can’t because they have to get divorced first. But we now have a lawyer to help us and her kids are all listening and really like it. It’s so much fun teaching them. I have used pretty much every picture or example that I know. They love learning about the gospel of Jesus Christ.  we teach it with a cup and a bottle cap. you have to fill the cup all the way to the brim and put the cap on top or else it will float to one of the sides. The cup is sin, we’re the cap and the water is the 5 parts of Leson 3. We also started teaching this really, really old man who is basically deaf. By the end of the lesson I had scooted my chair all the way across room and was yelling into his ear.

Another fun thing we did was helping build a house. We shoveled so much stuff. It was funny-the guy left us unattended laying the foundation of his house after like 20 minutes of instruction. He had to leave for a little bit to check some other construction things. I really enjoyed doing it- it’s nice to do some service to break up the rhythm a little bit. We then had a really powerful talk with the guy.

The most interesting guy I met this week was Hermano G........ We had lunch with him the other day. He’s champion of Karate of all of South America. He showed us his karate master certificate. He doesn’t do a lot of competicions anymore. He has a house of food. He makes homemade pasta and pizza and stuff. We got to his house and he was cutting up pasta for us. Before he was a member of the church he was a drug dealer. Now he’s in the obispado (he quit his job to be in the bishopric). He’s a pretty scary guy- I’m glad he’s a member -we’re gonna take him with us when we go to the sketchy parts of the area. hahahaha

Love you guys till next week!  Hey Andrew and anyone else with a suggestion.  I want to improve my accent. I want Spanish to sound really fluid. I would love any suggestions. Rhymes, songs,  ways to study etc... Also does reading with a pen in your mouth really work?

1- did you have your tooth fixed?
 working on that still...

2- have you ever eaten guinea pig? I saw a pic of some elders who had hunted guinea pigs with members and then had eaten them.
2-yeah we were gonna go do that, but someone stole a cow from the field/woods where they hunted them and the owners of the field are now shooting people who go in there. So that actividad isn’t gonna happen.

3- are you over your sickness? just a cold/flu?
3- Yep, I had a fever and an upset stomach but I got better. lots of juice

4- do you have water and electricity?
 4- today, we do

“This was actually really fun. We went and helped lay the foundation for a part member family. I shoveled a lot of stuff. If anyone wants to build a house I know how to do it J. Making cement is really easy.”

“Yes, I know how to build a house now.”

Family and friends- How are you????
I’m sick and that really stinks, but it’s been a good week still. I did a ton of intercambios this week so I got to know all of Longchamps. One area here has a like an apartment that’s super rich. They even have an electric stove. (that’s ridiculous here) I got to ride on a thousand dollar bike and had a guy convinced for a minute that I was from Brasil. I’ve been on so many buses and trains and I forgot like one thing in each apartment. Towel, key, etc... after all those adventures I got sick. I’ve been in bed a lot trying to get better. It’s been hard and our water has been messed up so it’s just been a little rough. But I played some soccer with the ward and some investigators the other day. I am not good at soccer. But we played with a little foam football today with the zone. I started imagining a real football- It just makes more sense. We made galletitas for a family that we had to cancel dinner with because I was sick. That was an adventure. I’m sick, with a flashlight in my mouth because we don’t have running lights or water- trying to make snickerdoodles. They came out well. The family home evening this week- we made a tower of missionaries and members and taught about how the ward and members can support the missionaries. I have a video,  but I don’t know how to send it. I’m doing good, say his to Travis for me, I love you all, go eat something spicy for me!!! I would love to do that book of mormon thing with you guys but I’m in the middle of reading it right now again and I don’t really feel like starting over.
Love you guys

"I haven't got the pancake flipping down yet. I dumped it all over the floor. I've decided that this is a new mission goal be able to flip pancakes. lucky that their cheap."

So, a little bit better of a week. We got a phone and have got the area down pretty well. I need to give mom a shout out for cleaning the bathroom when we were younger. The elders before didn’t do to good of a job taking care of the apartment. It was about a 5 hour cleaning experience last p-day to get it presentable.  Some fun things have been all the opportunities I’ve had to speak in front of people this week. I haven’t been a fan of speaking to groups of people. It gets me kinda nervous. But I’ve gotten a lot of opportunities to overcome that. First, the district mtg with my giant district. Oh and get who decided to come and visit my district mtg this week with his wife? Prez. But it came out really well. Next, we got to give an orientation to the seminary class and then go do visits with them. That was really fun. Then every Friday our ward does a noche de hogar. We got like 40-50 people there and like 5 investigators. We got up and taught the restoration. I made like a little church out of cardboard and put it on a baking pan and had it fall to represent the fall of the church. It was really good and fun. The ward here is super involved with everything- it’s great. We also got to talk to during Jose Luis’ baptism and it came out really well. It was a great experience for everyone. This is a really great ward and we’re gonna have a lot of success here
Love you guys!

1- Argentina Independence Day, what did you do? did you have to be in early?
1- Independence Day we tried to use some fireworks, but they didn’t really work... they were just little tiny ones

2- How are you and your new comp?
2 -we’re good we’re gonna make shirts that say longchampions

3- What's your area like? We can't even find it on the map in the dining room and the weather doesn't come up on my iPhone app.
3- lots of open space a lot like La Plata. lots of dirt roads. it’s a little smaller, but kinda hard to manage cause like none of the streets are marked so we get lost once in a while.

4- any interesting food in Longchamps?
4 so many empenadas. I think I’m gonna get some mundungo soon.
I think we’re gonna go get some ice cream today. We get 450 peso of reembolsos a week for fruit. and for me that means I now have 450 peso more to use. I feel pretty rich with that.

5- give me a funny experience?
5- I’ll send you the pancake pic

6- give me an awesome experience?
6- Jose Luis got baptised which was great. a ton of people showed up including some investigators. It was just a good night even though the font didn’t get filled up too much.

7- do you hear much news from the US?
You know I don’t think we get much legitimate news from the US here. but I have heard a ton of conspiracy theories from Latinos recently. I’m pretty convinced now that we didn’t land on the moon and that the president is in league with aliens.

July 6, 2015- in Longchamps with Elder Durham

Wow sounds like all is good at home. That’s crazy that Sarah is getting married! The time passes so fast! The big game here was Argentina vs Chile for the copa. Argentina just can’t pull it through, they lost and I heard that Messi got roughed up a bit. I’m not so sure about the Women’s Cup, didn’t hear anything- If Japan and the US were that good people would talk about them here.

so the definition of this week has been 1 Nefi 4 6.
We have not had a phone, an area book, money, list of members, and I haven’t had an agenda,  but we’ve still had a lot of success. My district consists of 10 elders now and its really different. Longchamps is a lot more like el Carmen. Lots of campo and stuff. Dirt roads, not a whole lot of civilization, but the ward is really great. The quorum here is really strong and are all pumped up to do visits and service and stuff. Because of some weird changes and stuff my comp doesn’t really know our area very well so were sorta trying to get to know it together and get it going. We’ve been helping two other elders who are also new to the area move into their apartment so that’s been an adventure too. We have a lot of good prospects and should be having a baptism coming up in the next few weeks. It’s been crazy with all the soccer games going on- lots of fireworks and gun shots. I’m gonna be famous for making pancakes here- I’ve already promised a bunch of families I’d make it for them.
Love you guys and have fun.

1- what is mate?
1-mate is like tea that’s not against the word of wisdom. It’s what keep argentine going. Google it. I had never seen it before the mission, but everyone and their dog drinks it here.
